DANNY BARWICK FLICKERING

We’ve said it before, we’ll say it again, and we’ll probably continue to say it for a good while to come - no one does electronic music quite like the Australians! For more proof of this claim, look towards the Melbourne-via-Perth artist Danny Barwick who has set the bar mighty high with his debut song ‘Flickering’, which today has been matched by an equally intense music video. With the camera closed in on the face and expressions of an elderly man, you’ll find yourself hypnotised by this simple yet effective visual accompaniment that somehow seems perfectly suited to Barwick’s experimental electronica. Possibly tapping into his philosophy degree, the Australian musician asks 'what does it mean... incapable?', with his distinctly dented and richly tonal voice. He continues to explore isolating emotions through jazz piano and layers of digital drums, warped vocals, samples and synths. The listener isn’t given much breathing room in this crowded song, it’s almost overwhelming, but in a good kind of way. One thing that’ll stick with you once the three minute surge of sound if over is the refrain, 'darling, all night, I’ve been flickering,' which is repeated over and over, leaving you with a strange momentum from the dizzying and complex soundscape with which Barwick has introduced himself. - Hannah Thacker
